I used to have an optical mouse on my computer at home, and I had to turn
it over and poke an open paperclip into a small hole at the same time I had
it aimed at the "eye". Somehow this move reset something. This step was
required each time I installed a new battery. ????

That was my problem, maybe it will help you ????
