For those of you with iDVD 4 and want to burn to an external burner,
I am testing a way to do it. It looks good, but until the testing is
done I won't make anything available. If it works out, the external
DVD burner works as if it were an internal superdrive with no
additional steps

But as a future alternative, there is iDVD 5
(http://www.macworld.com/2005/01/news/idvd5firstlook/index.php). It
will allow use of an external burner in a roundabout fashion. You
create your iDVD project and then save it as a disk image and then
use Disk Utility to burn it to you DVD burner
