The following is for information only and to let you know that a
issue exists that is being dealt with.

Some schools are beginning to get HP and Lexmark printers that will
not work with OS 8.6 and OS 9.x Macs over the network. These printers
do not have Appletalk. They do work fine with OS X though. They will
work with Macs that have USB for a direct connection.

There are a couple ideas being considered to deal with this. In the
meantime those of you who schools with these printers can either move
older printers around to best effect.

If you call the help desk about one of these printers a work order
will be created. The help desk will be asking what Mac you're using.
What version of the Mac OS you have. And which printer this is. This
information will help determine the scope of the resolution selected

There is one idea that will require a bit of testing. If you'd like
to help, please let me know. It requires an all OS 9 lab, does not
require upgrading to OS X, and will not disrupt your lab schedule

Again, this only affects Macs. PC will go along as before. And for
Mac users, the problem is receiving attention. And a summary of
options will be on the desk of the Director of IS very, very soon.
