I read a recent article about turning off the IPv6 ID protocol for
TCP/IP for OS X and that it improves network response. I tried it and
it does. What you get is max transfer speed consistently and makes
the connection more reliable

Making the change is simple. In your admin acct (for school Macs) go
to system preferences > network > Built-in ethernet - click the
"configure IPv6" button. Then at the pop-up menu select "off". Click
ok and then click apply now. That's it

This is only a benefit with the built-in ethernet. It's not an option
with wireless. I have tried this both on my home Mac and work Mac and
I like it. My home connection transfer speeds are hitting the max
they are capable of on a more consistent basis
