As I understand it, Sophos does not detect viruses in e-mail till you
try and open an infected mail or attachment. The same for an infected
file. Until you try to open it, Sophos does not know it's there. Nor
does Sophos scan at startup for viruses

But you can run a manual scan anytime you want and if you have a
virus, Sophos will find it.

And if you do have Sophos installed, be sure to have the applescript
supplied by the Sophos people and specially modified by IS for
district use in the startup items folder on your Mac. This
applescript automatically mounts the Sophos server partition long
enough for the Sophos application to check for updates. Then the
partition is automatically dismounted. All transparently and with no
user interaction. Otherwise you have the Sophos partition mounted all
the time

And when doing a manual scan, on the older Macs it can take a long
time unless Sophos is specially configured to target specific
directories. If you can get your users to keep all documents and
Eudora mailboxes in the documents folder, then you can set Sophos to
scan that one high risk area. On the older Macs this reduces a 60
minute scan to 5 minutes depending on number of files.

99% of the viruses the district suffer from are PC viruses. All the
Macs can do is be a "carrier" for these viruses whether a user
physically forwards an infected file to a PC user. Or saves it to the
server when backing up files
