Not to post to the list is a waste of a good resource and Don's
efforts to make life easier for all the lab techs. Not posting and
not sharing makes everyone into little islands instead of a
continent. And the issue of software on district computers has
always been there. You will remember a couple years ago the
insistence of proving licensing for software? This is no different.
None of us are free to put what we want on any district computer. And
what goes there must be accounted for
I called Steve and talked to him for about 20 minutes about this. I
certainly sympathize with him, but I also don't agree with him. This
is an opportunity, not a door in the face. It's just a matter of
paperwork
When I was first directed to deal with this issue, I was concerned
there was no list of approved software and no way to get it approved.
I don't normally deal with the procurement side. But I knew a lot of
you have software that is approved by ET. The MECC software is an
example. Everyone has it and uses it and everyone knows it is
approved. But there is no written history of it
I've always wondered how new lab techs know what to do without
documentation. A lot of it seems to be word of mouth
There is a mechanism in place to deal with this issue. And what Don
is doing collecting the information is important. But aside from the
software is the web sites that are referred to as a good source of
software. A list of those sites needs included too. I don't know a
single lab tech that doesn't rely on some site for free software. And
any list of software has to include the source and if it's commercial
or freeware. And have licensing annotated as necessary. The
legalities MUST be observed for any list to be relevant
